Dr. Ahmed Al-Hiti, President of the United Iraqi Medical Society for Relief and Development (UIMS), met with Dr. Thamer Qasim Dawood, Director General of the General Commission for Customs, at the Commission’s headquarters in Baghdad to discuss opportunities for joint cooperation and strengthen institutional partnerships in the health, humanitarian, and development sectors, with the aim of supporting national initiatives and expanding their community impact.

During the meeting, the two sides reviewed several strategic projects implemented by UIMS across various Iraqi governorates and explored opportunities for coordination and collaboration. The discussions highlighted the importance of strengthening partnerships between government institutions and civil society organizations and leveraging shared resources and expertise to address humanitarian and development priorities.

The discussions also addressed the possibility of signing a cooperation agreement between the Commission and UIMS to establish a structured institutional framework for coordination, develop future areas of collaboration, and support the implementation of initiatives and projects with sustainable impact, in accordance with the respective mandates and applicable legal frameworks.

During the meeting, Dr. Ahmed Al-Hiti presented the Society’s key national initiatives, foremost among them the (Adahi Iraq) Project, which represents a model of community solidarity by supporting disadvantaged families and the most vulnerable groups across Iraq. He also highlighted the national “Their Heartbeats, Our Hope” campaign, which aims to support healthcare institutions by providing incubators for premature and newborn infants, strengthening neonatal and intensive care units, and improving the quality of medical care provided to these children.

Both sides also explored opportunities to cooperate in supporting healthcare institutions, hospitals, and specialized cancer treatment centers, including strengthening their capacity through the provision of medical devices, equipment, and supplies. These efforts aim to support the development of healthcare infrastructure and improve the quality of services provided to patients.

Dr. Ahmed Al-Hiti reaffirmed UIMS’s commitment to expanding its partnerships with national institutions, emphasizing the importance of establishing cooperation frameworks based on complementary roles and shared social responsibility. Such partnerships can help move beyond individual initiatives toward sustainable institutional projects that respond to the community’s actual needs and deliver a lasting development impact.

For his part, Dr. Thamer Qasim Dawood, Director General of the General Commission for Customs, expressed interest in the projects and initiatives presented by UIMS and his readiness to strengthen cooperation and coordination, while exploring available opportunities to support health and humanitarian efforts in line with the Commission’s mandate and applicable legislation and regulations.

This meeting forms part of UIMS’s broader efforts to strengthen institutional cooperation with government entities and expand national partnerships in support of priority projects. These efforts aim to enhance coordination between official institutions and community initiatives and contribute to achieving a sustainable humanitarian and development impact for the people of Iraq.
