The United Iraqi Medical Society for Relief and Development Participates in The 28th Annual United Nations Climate Change Meeting.
- The United Iraqi Medical Society for Relief and Development (UIMS) participated in the 28th Annual United Nations Climate Change Conference, held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from November 30 to December 12, 2023. The Society’s participation focused to address and prepare for climate change from a healthcare perspective
- During the conference, the association presented a series of recommendations aimed at mitigating climate change and protecting public health from its effects.

1 – Investing in renewable energy sources and energy efficiency.
2 – Protecting forests and natural habitats.
3 – Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from industrial and transportation sectors.
4 – Enhancing preparedness for climate change-related disasters. - The association emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts between governmental and non-governmental entities to address climate change.
- Healthcare is an essential part of this effort, as healthcare must be prepared to deal with the health impacts of climate change, such as infectious diseases and heat-related illnesses.
- During the conference, the association’s representative, Dr. Monther Mahmoud, met with officials from the United Nations and member states, and participated in various events, including a dialogue session on “Public Health and Climate Change.”
- Dr. Ahmed Al-Heeti, President of The United Iraqi Medical Society for Relief and Development, added: “We are committed to working on mitigating climate change and protecting public health from its effects, and we believe that the annual United Nations meeting on climate change is a crucial platform for advancing this work. We call on all the relevant authorities to take immediate action to address climate change. This is a global issue that requires a global solution.”
- Additionally, the association has produced a series of videos showcasing its activities in the field of climate change mitigation, in collaboration with the Iraqi Ministry of Environment. These videos have highlighted the association’s efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting the environment, and enhancing preparedness for climate change-related disasters.
- These videos aim to raise public awareness about climate change and its effects, and to promote action towards mitigating these effects.”
